History of Abbeville Road Clapham
Before the 1870s the area around Abbeville Road was mostly rural, with just a few large mansions with extensive grounds. These included The Clock House, Eagle House, Pine House, and The Elms (which is today Trinity Hospice).
Most of the area where Abbeville Road is today, was owned by The Clock House and used as a farm. In 1875 the Clock House was sold, and the part of Abbeville Road closest to Cavendish Road was built.
In the years that followed, more of the mansions lining Clapham Common were demolished, and their land was sold off. This coincided with the growing population of London, and an increasing demand for homes for the middle classes.
In the 1880s, the roads around Abbeville Road, including Hambalt Road, Narbonne Avenue and Shandon Road, were built and lined with terraced houses. The remainder of Abbeville Road was constructed, and designed as a local shopping parade to service the neighbouring residential streets.
According to Charles Booth’s poverty map of 1898-99, the streets around Abbeville Road were mostly middle class, with a few upper class homes closer to Clapham Common. You can see on the map below, the roads with middle class houses are marked in red, and the wealthy homes are yellow.
Where Did the Name Abbeville Come From?
In the sixteenth century members of the French Protestant Church fled the commune of Abbeville in France to escape persecution. Many of them settled in the area around where Abbeville Road is today.
This is how Abbeville Road got its name, and also why there are many French street names coming off Abbeville Road (Narbonne Road, Bonneville Gardens, Trouville Road).
